Manhunt Ends in Texas Mass Shooting Suspect’s Arrest

According to CNN, Francisco Oropesa, the suspect in a Texas mass shooting that left five people dead, was captured on Tuesday. Oropesa now faces one count of first-degree felony murder with four more counts expected. His longtime partner, Divimara Lamar Nava, is also charged with hindering apprehension or prosecution of a known felon.

As reported by CNN, the shooting took place on Friday night in Cleveland, northwest of Houston. The victims, all Honduran nationals, were gunned down after they asked Oropesa to stop firing his rifle outside their home. The attack is among more than 180 US mass shootings this year.

A manhunt for Oropesa stretched across the US and into Mexico, involving federal, state, and local authorities. An FBI tip line ultimately led to his capture, where he was found hiding in a closet under a pile of laundry. At least four times since 2009, Oropesa had entered the US unlawfully and been deported, according to an ICE source.

Authorities now have 90 days to indict Oropesa, and the Mexican consulate will be formally notified of his circumstances. The investigation is ongoing, with several arrests made in connection with the slayings, and more charges expected to be filed.
