Google has started rolling out passkeys, a secure and simple way of signing in to apps and websites, as the first step towards a future without passwords. Google Passkeys are a new sign-in alternative, making it easier for users to access websites and apps without having to remember complex passwords that can be easily compromised. According to Google’s blog, passkeys can be used to unlock devices with a fingerprint, face scan, or screen lock PIN, which makes it easier and more secure than traditional passwords. Passkeys are also resistant to online attacks such as phishing and offer better security than SMS one-time codes.
Google announced that it would be working on this new feature last year, along with the FIDO Alliance, Microsoft, and Apple. As reported by Google’s blog, passkeys are already being deployed by several services such as Docusign, Kayak, PayPal, Shopify, and Yahoo! Japan to streamline their sign-in process.
The company is rolling out passkeys across Google Accounts on all major platforms. Google Passkeys will be an additional option for users to sign in, alongside passwords and two-step verification (2SV).
Google said that administrators will soon have the option to enable passkeys for end-users during sign-in for Google Workspace accounts. However, passwords and 2SV will still be available for those who prefer it.
