The creators behind “Despelote,” an immersive adventure game that brings together childhood memories and the love of soccer in 2001 Quito, Ecuador, have confirmed that the game will be available on Xbox Series X|S in 2024. The announcement is coupled with exciting news that “Despelote” will be a part of the esteemed Tribeca’s 2023 Festival Selection. The game is set to be published by Panic, a well-known publisher responsible for fan-favorites like “Untitled Goose Game” and “Firewatch.”
Despelote: An Unconventional Soccer Game
“Despelote” is a soccer game, but not in the traditional sense. Players won’t find themselves in full-fledged soccer matches or burdened with understanding intricate rules. The game offers a more relaxed approach, focusing on the simple joy of being a child kicking a soccer ball around with friends, and navigating the ups and downs of everyday school life, all while possibly irritating some neighbors.
A Unique Journey Back in Time
Set in 2001, “Despelote” captures a time when Ecuador was on the brink of its first-ever World Cup qualification. This prospect sparked hope and optimism in a nation recovering from a significant financial crisis. The game promises an engaging journey, where players learn about Quito’s residents while playing soccer and experience the palpable energy and optimism of the community.
A Personal Touch
Lead developer Julián and artist Sebastián Valbuena aimed to make “Despelote” visually distinctive and reflective of a specific locale. This attention to authenticity is partly due to the game’s semi-autobiographical nature, as Julián grew up in Quito during this time. Players navigate the game as a young boy named Julian, though he is not a direct representation of the developer himself.

Immersive Gameplay
To provide an authentic depiction of Ecuador, the developers captured real-life photos and audio during visits to Quito, which they’ve incorporated into the game’s environment and conversations. The game features hand-drawn characters and a fully voice-acted Spanish dialogue, offering localized subtitles to accommodate various preferences.
So get ready for “Despelote” – a sometimes dreamy, semi-autobiographical tale about soccer’s impact on a place and its culture. Prepare to take a trip to Quito when the game releases on Xbox, PC (Steam & EGS), and Playstation 5 in 2024.
