MS-13 Gang Member Sentenced 28 Years for Murders

In a landmark ruling, a Maryland court today sentenced Franklyn Edgardo Sanchez, a known member of the notorious MS-13 gang, to 28 years behind bars. Sanchez’s crimes, forming part of a racketeering conspiracy, included two shocking murders according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

From Street Thug to High Ranking MS-13 Member

Sanchez, known by various aliases including Freddy, Magic, Miclo, and Delinquente, is confirmed to have been an active member of MS-13 from at least August 2018 through July 2021. Originating from El Salvador and other Central American countries, MS-13 has grown to become one of the largest and most dangerous street gangs operating within the United States. Residing in Adelphi, Sanchez was closely associated with Weedams Locos Salvatrucha (WLS), a locally active clique of the MS-13 gang.

Committing Heinous Acts in the Name of MS-13

MS-13 is infamous for its brutal code, requiring members to commit acts of violence to maintain their standing within the gang and to exert dominance over rival factions. Sanchez, a loyal foot soldier, adhered to this vicious rule and even participated in the cold-blooded murder of a former WLS member on Feb. 23, 2020, which elevated his position within the gang.

A Series of Cold-Blooded Murders

In a shocking incident on Aug. 8, 2020, Sanchez and other WLS members conspired to murder another individual, leading him to a remote wooded area in Prince George’s County under false pretenses. Upon his arrival, the victim was ruthlessly shot and stabbed to death by Sanchez and another gang member.

Covering Tracks and Spreading Fear

In a chilling bid to avoid detection, WLS leader Brayan Alexander Torres ordered fellow members to bury the victim’s body, effectively concealing vital DNA evidence. Sanchez also engaged in money laundering activities, funneling gang funds to MS-13 associates in El Salvador.

Justice Served to MS-13 Criminals

Sanchez, along with Torres, Hernan Yanes-Rivera, and Agustino Eugenio Rivas Rodriguez, previously pled guilty to racketeering conspiracy. Under the terms of their plea deals, Torres faces 28 years in prison, Yanes-Rivera 22 years, and Rivas Rodriguez 16 years. Sentencing dates for all three are set for later this year.

Law Enforcement Collaboration to Dismantle Gang Activity

This successful prosecution is the result of comprehensive investigation and cooperation between multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, HSI, and Prince George’s County Police Department. The case is a significant step in the continued fight against violent crime and gang activity, part of broader initiatives such as Project Safe Neighborhoods and the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force.
