At WolfWood Refuge, there’s a unique tale of a dog whose life took an unexpected turn, leading her to a place where she unexpectedly found happiness. This dog, Henna, is an ordinary canine who, however, holds an extraordinary belief – that she is a full-blooded wolf. This endearing self-perception comes to life as she confidently struts among true wolves at the refuge, embracing her role as a beloved member of the WolfWood family. Her past life of attending events to show the difference between her species and her wolf counterparts has set the stage for her current celebrity status.

From Rebellion to Refuge
Henna’s journey to WolfWood was not a walk in the park. Originally, she belonged to an owner who, despite local laws, treated her as a wild animal. This misidentification led to Henna wandering into trouble when she found and chased chickens at a neighbor’s property. The neighbor’s plea for restitution and containment was outright dismissed by her then-owner, who faced legal repercussions for his negligence. Instead of a bleak outcome, Henna was rescued by a former volunteer and found sanctuary at WolfWood, where she has since been a permanent and cherished resident.
Life Among Wolves at WolfWood
Despite her rough start and the misconception that she was a wolf, Henna has flourished at the refuge. She’s an enthusiastic participant in educational tours, showing no signs of missing her life before the refuge. Additionally, Henna has a particular fondness for the spotlight and snacks, often vocalizing her demands to the amusement of her caretakers. Following the passing of her previous companion, the refuge staff is now contemplating a suitable pairing to provide her with a new friend, ensuring her happiness remains a priority.
Animal highlight this week is Henna!
Henna is one of our resident “just a dog”s, but she doesn’t believe it! Henna thinks she is a beautiful full wolf and nothing you tell her will convince her otherwise. She is an incredibly sweet little diva. She used to go out on events with Wolfwood to give people an example of what a wolf looks like compared to a dog. On those events she always wanted to be the star.
Before she was put on a diet we lovingly refered to her as our “coffee table wolf” because she was as wide as she was tall! She is a beacon of self-confidence and we should all learn to love ourselves as much as Henna.
So why do we have Henna if she is as perfect as she sounds, and not a wolf? Henna is a criminal and is court ordered to live at Wolfwood. She originally belonged to someone who claimed she was a full wolf, and he refused to keep her contained in any way. So she did what most dogs would do and wandered around. Her wandering took her to the neighbors house where she found some very tasty and fun to chase chickens… The neighbor was a reasonable person and told her owner that he just needed to keep her behind a fence and pay him back for the loss of his chickens. The owner refused and claimed that since Henna was a “full wolf” she needed to run free and he would rather shoot her than lock her up. Instead one of Wolfwood’s old volunteers was able to get ahold of her and bring her to the refuge while the owner went through the court process. Wolfwood was given custody of her and here she shall stay.
Even if she could have been someone’s pet, Henna is very happy at the refuge. She loves meeting with children on tours, and loves yelling at her caretakers to give her more snacks and to feed her faster! For most of her time at Wolfwood she lived with Siren, since Siren passed away we have been considering who would be a good candidate to pair her with. We hope to give her a new friend very soon!
